Frequently asked questions regarding club volleyball

  • What is the RMR?

RMR stands for the Rocky Mountain Region, the USA Volleyball regional organization that oversees junior volleyball in Colorado and surrounding areas. The RMR establishes competition rules, membership requirements, tournament regulations, officiating requirements, and other standards that clubs and teams follow throughout the season. VC Denver is a member club of the RMR and follows RMR and USA Volleyball policies.

  • Why do tournament schedules get published the week of a tournament?

Tournament schedules are created and released by the RMR for local tournaments or by tournament hosts for travel tournaments—not VC Denver. Schedules depend on the final number of teams, divisions, courts, and other tournament logistics, so they often cannot be finalized until shortly before the event.

Once the schedule is released, VC Denver communicates it to families as soon as possible. We know families need to plan travel, so we will always share tournament information as soon as it is available to us.

  • Why does my daughters' team have to ref games while at tournaments?

"Reffing" is a normal and important part of club volleyball. At tournaments, teams are assigned work-team responsibilities such as scorekeeping or line judging. These responsibilities help tournaments run smoothly and also teach athletes more about the game. All athletes are expected to remain at their playing site until all playing and reffing resposibilites are complete.

  • Are there any additional costs to the club season?

Club dues cover the costs outlined in your team’s club agreement, but families should plan for some additional expenses throughout the season.

These may include USA Volleyball/RMR membership fees, tournament travel expenses such as hotels, flights, meals and transportation, and optional programs such as strength and movement training. Strength training is available separately for athletes who would like to participate and is not included in club dues. VC Denver will communicate team-specific or required expenses as far in advance as possible.

  • What is a stay-to-play tournament?

A stay-to-play tournament requires participating teams to book their hotel rooms through the tournament's designated hotel system or approved hotels in order to participate. These requirements are set by the tournament host, not VC Denver. When a tournament is stay-to-play, we will provide families with information about the hotel booking process and deadlines.

  • Can parents watch practices?

To help athletes get the most out of their training, VC Denver does not allow parents to watch club team practices. Practice is the athletes' opportunity to focus on their coaches, teammates, and their own development without outside distractions. It also allows coaches to give athletes feedback, make corrections, and challenge them in a focused environment. We know parents want to see their athletes play and improve, which is why tournaments, scrimmages, and other designated events are open opportunities for families to watch their athletes compete.

  • What is the difference between Squad Fusion and Band?

SquadFusion is your season management platform. This is where families can access registrations, payments, events, schedules, and other important club information. This is also where emails will be sent to you from the directors. BAND is your team's communication platform. Coaches use BAND for team announcements, reminders, practice information, tournament updates, and other day-to-day communication.

    Think of it as:

SquadFusion = club information and admin

    BAND = team specific communication

  • When should I book my flights for travel tournaments?

For travel tournaments, athletes should plan to land no later than 9:00 PM the night before the tournament begins and should not book a departure flight earlier than 6:00 PM on the final day of the tournament. This gives teams enough time to arrive, prepare, and compete without creating unnecessary travel conflicts. Families should also account for potential tournament schedule changes and travel delays when booking.
